Read the award terms alongside the course details
The word “scholarship” is only the beginning. Before including an award in your plans, find the terms for your exact course, campus and intake. Keep a copy of the official page or award letter, and record whom you contacted if anything needs clarification.
Your eight questions
- Am I eligible? Check the qualification, grades, residency or other criteria specified for this award.
- Is a separate application needed? Ask whether applying for admission also enters you for consideration.
- What is the deadline? Record the scholarship deadline separately from the course deadline.
- What evidence is required? Identify essays, interviews, achievements or financial documents requested.
- What does the award cover? Distinguish tuition support from accommodation, living costs and other charges.
- How long does it last? Check whether it is a one-time reduction or renewable support.
- What are the renewal conditions? Ask about academic performance, attendance or any other requirements.
- When will I know? Compare the decision date with the date your acceptance deposit is due.
A worked example of the right question
If an offer mentions a percentage reduction, ask what that percentage is applied to. A reduction on first-year tuition is different from the same percentage across the full programme, and neither automatically includes living costs. Request an amount and duration in writing rather than estimating the value from the headline.
Keep the application organised
Use a separate row for each award with its official link, deadline, documents, submission date and result. Do not share sensitive family financial documents through an unverified channel. Follow the institution’s stated submission process.
Plan before the result
Keep an affordable plan based on confirmed funding. A pending scholarship can remain an option, but it should not quietly become a certainty in your budget. If the award arrives, read its conditions before accepting and update the family’s year-by-year cost plan.
