Choose a question, not an impressive title
Start with something you actually want to understand. A focused question gives you a direction and a way to judge progress. For example, a student interested in statistics could investigate how estimates change when a sample is small. A student interested in business could compare how three local shops describe the same product category.
Keep the first version small
Define what you will produce: a short report, a simple model, a working prototype or a presentation of findings. Set a manageable scope around your school workload. List the tools or skills you need and distinguish what you already know from what you will learn as you go. You can extend a sound small project later.
Keep evidence of the process
- Record the question and why you chose it.
- Keep dated notes on the steps you tried.
- Save the sources or data you used and check that you may use them.
- Document your own contribution if you work with someone else.
- Explain what failed or changed as well as what worked.
Make the analysis honest
Do not claim that a small exercise proves a broad conclusion. Explain the limitations of your data, method or prototype. For a survey, consider who responded and who did not. For a coding project, identify the cases it handles and those it still cannot. Acknowledging a limitation shows that you understand your own work.
Finish with reflection
Write a short answer to three questions: what did I find, what did I learn to do, and what would I investigate next? This helps you discuss the project clearly in an application or interview. A project is an opportunity to learn; it does not guarantee an admissions outcome.
